  • What Health Care Providers Need to Know about Transgender Legal Issues

    When: September 23, 2018 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
    Description:

This session covers legal topics that are helpful for providers to be familiar with such as writing effective medical necessity letters for insurance appeals, gender marker change letters, name change overview, consent for minors, and nondiscrimination laws. This is part of the CME conference Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health: A Core Course for the Whole Care Team, to be held September 21 – 23, 2018.

    OFFERED BY The Fenway Institute

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health is proposed as a national CME course, following three years in which a similar course was offered in Boston. The course was developed in response to the high volume of queries from clinicians and health care staff seeking to learn about providing high-quality care for adults, adolescents, and children who are questioning their gender identity or who identify as transgender or gender non-binary.

This conference is designed to train the whole health care team in providing competent and confident gender-affirmative health care, grounded in research evidence and best clinical practices. Sessions are led by expert faculty specialized in transgender-focused research and patient care. The conference is appropriate for all members of health care teams, including physicians, behavioral health care providers, physician assistants, nurses, and other staff.

  • Name and Gender Changes for Transgender Clients

    When: October 15, 2018 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
    Description:

Participants will learn how to obtain a court-ordered name change for transgender New York residents. Without a legal name and gender change, transgender people are forced to use ID that doesn’t match who they are. This creates barriers to accessing employment, housing and education. But many transgender people are not able to make it through the name change process on their own.

Upon completion of the training, you will be eligible to participate in Transcend Legal’s Name & Gender Recognition initiative, which matches volunteer attorneys with transgender people who need name change assistance.
