  • Nassau County Bar Association: Transgender Name and Gender Change CLE

    When: June 14, 2018 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
    Description:

Participants will learn how to obtain a court-ordered name change for transgender New York residents. Without a legal name and gender change, transgender people are forced to use ID that doesn’t match who they are. This creates barriers to accessing employment, housing and education. But many transgender people are not able to make it through the name change process on their own. Upon completion of the training, you will be eligible to participate in Transcend Legal’s Name & Gender Recognition initiative, which matches volunteer attorneys with transgender people who need name change assistance.

  • Making Cisness Visible: Naming Cis Ideals That Shape Trans Lives

    When: August 03, 2018 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM
    Description:

Society is built around the needs of cis people and rarely takes into account the existence trans people. If we are not aware of cis-centered frameworks, attitudes, and beliefs that are operating around us, we unconsciously adopt them. This workshop provides a structure for making visible hidden cis ideals so that all people-cis and trans-can stop unconsciously perpetuating the oppression of trans people (including ourselves). Identifying these systems can be freeing. You will leave with the ability to name cis supremacy when you encounter it and thus be more prepared to eliminate it.

    When: August 04, 2018 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM
    Description:

Facial gender reassignment surgery and breast reconstruction are health care needs exclusive to trans women, and not coincidentally, are most likely to be deemed "cosmetic" or not medically necessary by insurance companies. This workshop is essential for providers who work with trans women and trans women who want to appeal denials on their own. Gain an understanding of the specific medical evidence in support of medical necessity as well as an understanding of how best to appeal. This is an opportunity to ask questions to attorneys who focus exclusively on transgender health care access.

This conference is designed to train the whole health care team in providing competent and confident gender-affirmative health care, grounded in research evidence and best clinical practices. Sessions are led by expert faculty specialized in transgender-focused research and patient care.
