Making connections at Philly Trans Health

Transcend Legal table at Philadelphia Trans Health Conference

Last week the whole Transcend Legal team attended the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference. We had a table, where our “free surgery?” sign drew curious onlookers over to read the fine print: “OK, not 100% free, but when you use insurance to pay for surgery, it’s a lot cheaper than paying out of pocket!”

Noah also delivered a standing-room-only workshop on Making Cisness Visible: Naming the Hidden Cis Ideals that Shape Trans Lives, which received an enthusiastic response. Noah also presented on a panel on getting trans-related care covered under insurance as well as on a name and gender change panel.

Coming soon: Trans Insurance Roadmap launches!

We’re about to launch a video series -- the Trans Insurance Roadmap -- which details how to get trans-related care covered under insurance. We see this as nothing less than the kick-off event to end trans health exclusions in the U.S. That is the goal of Transcend Legal, and we can’t do it without your help. This is a collective effort, and we need you to be a part of standing up and demanding equitable coverage. We’ll be releasing the first video next week, so stay tuned!

Take our 4-minute health-care survey!

Transcend Legal Health Insurance Survey

If you need surgery or hormones or are a parent, provider or advocate who helps trans people get insurance coverage, please take our 4-minute survey so that we can answer your questions during the video series. If you know anyone who needs trans health care, please pass along the survey so that they can get on our email list and hear about the videos when they come out.

Noah honored with Art Leonard Award

Noah receiving the Art Leonard Award

In June, the NYC Bar Association’s LGBT Rights Committee presented Noah with an Arthur S. Leonard Award for distinguished service on behalf of the LGBT community. Pictured above are Nia, Caroline, and Amanda, our amazing class of summer legal interns, along with Patricia Harrington and Transcend board member, Ida Hammer.

Noah served on the Committee from 2013-2016, and was tapped to come back to the Committee and serve as Chair from 2017-2020. Noah is the first transgender Chair of the Committee, and he appointed Alejendra Caraballo of the NY Legal Assistance Group as the Secretary

Noah selected as an Arcus Leadership Fellow

Noah at the Arcus Leadership Retreat.

Noah was selected to participate in the Arcus Leadership Fellowship program, an 18-month leadership development program established to support early-stage executive directors of LGBT organizations. In July, Noah travelled to Memphis for the kick-off retreat. As part of the program, Noah was paired with a dedicated mentor who provides counsel and support over the 18-month period.

Stay tuned for more!

We have more to say about what we’ve been up to, but we’ll stop here for now. We were busy working with clients this summer, and took a hiatus from the newsletter. But look for regular newsletters this fall and winter!
